This boy was a reminder that it is still good in the world
It was a cold, winter morning. The sun had yet to peek out from behind the grey clouds that filled the sky. I was on my way to work, riding the city bus. I was running a little late, so I was in a rush and not paying attention to much else other than making it to work on time.
As I scanned the bus for an open seat, my eyes landed on a teenage boy who was helping an elderly woman with a cane onto the bus. He was being so careful with her, assisting her every step of the way. The woman had the biggest smile on her face. They both sat directly across from me.
Just as I was about to compliment her on having a wonderful grandson, the boy looked at her and said, ‘My name is Trimgum. What’s your name, ma’am?’
I was taken aback. I didn’t expect the boy to be anything other than nice, but the compassion and care that he was showing this woman were remarkable.
Throughout the ride, the two of them talked and laughed like they had known each other for years. It was refreshing to see such kindness in the world. Too often we get caught up in our own lives and we forget to show compassion for others. This boy was a reminder that it is still good in the world.
